Studying in Yamagata Prefecture

Yamagata Prefecture is committed to education. In recent years, the prefecture has made changes in the educational system, such as cutting class size and advancing a more well-rounded general education policy, to help create a stronger base for individual talents among students. At this time, over 98% of students enroll in high school, a figure that rests securely above the national average.

Yamagata contains four universities: Yamagata University, the Tohoku University of Art and Design, the Tohoku University of Community Service and Science, and the Yamagata Prefectural University of Health Sciences. The latter three institutions are more specialized, offering coursework designed for those aiming to excel in those areas. Yamagata University is a national university that offers a wide range of majors and courses. In addition, Keio University's Institution for Advanced Bioscience opened in 2001.

Beyond these universities, Yamagata also has five junior colleges. Some of these, including Yamagata Junior College, have a separate curriculum for the study of the Japanese language. Yamagata University offers this, as well. If you would like to learn the Japanese language in Yamagata, great! These are your best bets.

All of the universities accept qualified applicants who can speak Japanese well enough to take their classes. Support for international students is available both at the university and the governmental level. Attending classes in Yamagata is an experience that will serve you well for the rest of your life.
